I don't really like the idea that there's a "right" and "wrong" way to watch a show or movie.

"Pff, people who watch Firefly for the snappy dialogue and character interaction aren't doing it right. It should only be watched for the deeper commentary on political power."

Yeah, it sucks when someone's in the same fandom and you still don't have a lot to talk about, but that can happen with anything, shippers vs. gen, canon vs. fanon, what specific episodes of Doctor Who you like/loathe, movieverse vs. showverse vs. comicverse.

One time as a wee child I had on a Sonic shirt. Another kid ran up to me all excited "What game was your favorite?! Are you excited about the new game coming out?!" "Oh, I don't really play the games. What show version was your favorite?" "I've never seen the show..." And we both just awkwardly stared then walked away. But I'm certainly not going to say they weren't a 'real' fan for enjoying different aspects of it.
