Attractive people sell, finding good actors and actresses who are also attractive isn't that hard, if you put all the time and energy into every other aspect of it, why not in the people who are going to play the parts you care that much about?

attractive is not necessarily picture perfect, personally I much prefer the British casting tradition over the American one.

Their problem is that if all people are watching for is the hot lead actor, then why the fuck are they even bothering writing the show/working on it/etc outside from the lead actor?

Actors are a part of the mise en scene which the original Anon would know if they are in the business. Actors are a pretty damn important part of it, so yes it is important to cast the correct people in the correct role and attractiveness is a part of that.

It is one of the tactics you use in Film/TV to make people watch what you make, but you can't hold an audience on prettiness alone, which is where everything else comes in. No matter how attractive a person is, you can't hold peoples attention if it isn't entertaining on some level.

I am not saying I don't understand where the Original!Anon is coming from, and I can even understand why s/he thinks it sucks, but the reality is that most people are shallow. Most people prefer to watch attractive people if they have the choice. If the people are attractive enough you can even make them watch low quality stuff, but here is the thing it will still be sub par, it will still be bad entertaining it will just have a pretty face. Good entertainment does everything well, and that includes casting.
