For me it depends on the ship, sometimes you go in knowing this particular pairing won't become canon because it's something few people ship or because TPTB are queerbaiting. Other times, it's genuinely a question of will they or won't they? I dislike the notion fandom has that any hinting at a same-sex pairing that isn't immediately followed-up on is queerbaiting. Granted, a lot of it probably is, but some might just be building up tension or trying something out. Why always assume the worst?
