It was about average for a new writer of a niche genre. It wasn't disastrous, but it was no NYT best-seller. Of course anyone thinking it was going to be would be a total fool, most debut niche-genre novels don't do big sales. It was in-line with industry expectations for the type of author she was presenting as. Of course it didn't get enough time to build on its own before her outing, and it didn't get a sequel before her outing. Sequel sales in that genre are what tells you whether or not you're going to make it. I think you are being unfairly harsh in your attempt to be a Rowling anti-fan.

Crime/detective novels aren't that niche, though. Also my point was that doing about average for a first time author =/= "very successful" as iggy remarked.
