(Anonymous) 2014-11-07 12:32 am (UTC)(link)The theme is that no one is 100% evil or good and plenty of bio parents were assholes in this universe too, see: Regina's mother, Rumple & Milena, Rumple's dad, Emma... I think you'll find way more bad parents than good, here, actually.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-07 04:22 am (UTC)(link)Huh? Leopold is a really decent guy. He cares about his subjects, gave Sidney his freedom, and was willing to forgive Cora if she hadn't lied to him.
Remember that everything Regina and Henry Sr told Sidney was a lie meant to incite him to murder the king. Leopold's only crime was reading Regina's diary and since she *wanted* him to do that to make sure her plan worked, I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt on that one. Two episodes before this one, the show made a point of telling us all about compulsion spells that could be put on objects to ensure someone was drawn to them.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-07 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)He was mostly a decent guy, but he couldn't get past his love for his dead wife to be even show basic human decency to his new wife.
None of that remotely excuses Regina's actions, of course. But he was horrible to her.

(I've watched only first eps, before the death of that one character)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-07 04:12 am (UTC)(link)I’m just sick of the abusive parent trope being used to excuse a villain’s actions. I swear that Leopold and the Hatter are the only decent biological fathers on this damn show. Well, them and pre-Dark One Rumplestiltskin. Sometimes I feel like I’m watching Adam and Eddie’s therapy sessions instead of a TV show.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-07 05:37 am (UTC)(link)There are less children as the seasons go on though. Henry gets older and I don't think the writers knew what to do with him, so he's barely in it now.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 12:30 am (UTC)(link)Rumple and Milah were pretty bad bio parents (nutjob Dark One and child abandonment). Cora is arguably the worst parent on the show and she's a bio mom but even she has some pretty stiff competition in Peter Pan. Cinderella and Belle had shitty parents too. Jiminy Cricket had crappy bio parents. Hell, even Red's mom was a total bitch (pun totally intended).
There really aren't that many adoptive parents in the first place and most of them (aside from Regina and Henry) are overwhelmingly positive.
The show very much makes the point that you make your own family. Red and Snow. Pinocchio and Gepetto. Rumple and his crazy spinsters. Dude, even SNOW goes around forgiving THE FREAKING EVIL QUEEN for all the things even though Regina's spent the better part of her her life trying to kill Snow. They're not biologically related but to Snow they're 'family'.
It's the bio relationships that are seriously fucked.
I'm sick of people using the argument that OUAT sheds a bad light on adoption and step parents. Just because the main adoptive relationship is abusive and crazy doesn't mean it's making a blanket statement about it. When a kid is adopted by the Evil Queen, historically a notoriously bad post child for step / adopted parenting anyway - who has a history of abusing and attempting to kill her non biological children (and other completely unrelated children), it's not a stretch to think that she might continue in that direction. It's not a commentary on adoption and step parenting in the real world, it's the Evil Freaking FAIRYTALE Queen.
