I would argue that's still slightly better. Equally evil, but less crazy. There's knowing something is evil and doing it anyway for selfish gain, and truly believing in an ideology and thinking it's right.

Not arguing that. But there's personal crazy and ideological crazy and there's a difference in that, too. Doesn't excuse either of them for what they do, but one is more understandable.

I thought that excuse was "just following orders," not "I was an evil selfish asshole, just not a crazy fanatic asshole"... which is not much of an "excuse" at all, more a clarification of motive.

The latter is what I'm talking about, which I think you missed.
