Weird Things You Get Complicated On

(Anonymous) 2014-11-07 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
What are some unusual compliments that you've gotten about yourself? For example, whenever I go to the Optometrist, I always get complicated on how well my eyes dilate (usually for regular eye exams, they don't even give me the dilating drops because my pupils always seem to be semi-dilated anyway). I had a minor eye procedure today, and almost every nurse I saw would say something to the effect of "Wow, your eyes really dilate! I wish every patient could be like that." It always makes me laugh a little

I've been told by a stranger that she likes my eyebrows.

When donating blood I've been told multiple times that I have beautiful veins. Beautiful. Not visible or otherwise easy to find, but beautiful.

I never really know how to reply to that.

I can't donate blood but I hear "you have great veins" from the phlebotomists when I have to have blood drawn.

Me too! Other things I've heard get noted are those bone thingy line things that protrude from the inside of your wrist when you make a fist. The person attending me once told me the ones with THREE were the nicest.

I'm one of those pale people doctors love to admire. "Wow, I can see your veins so clearly!" Of course my veins are also really tiny and surprisingly deep (my dad's are the same but he's got a darker complexion than me), so they always fuck up and I wind up with a giant bruise on my arm.

A nurse once complimented me for having great veins during a blood test. I'm not sure what she meant exactly... they're huge? Full of blood? Easy to stick with a needle? I'm weirdly proud about this all the same.

Thank you, I grew them myself.

My mom paid for me to get some makeup put on a few months ago and the lady there told me I had really nice skin. I don't know if that's necessarily unusual though.

We had to record messages for a computer class in high school and I remember one of my teachers telling me I had a really nice voice and should do infomercials. So I guess there's that -- although I'm not sure if doing informercials is really all that complimentary.

I got complimented on my cervix once by an OBGYN (it wasn't really in a creepy way or anything, I think she just found it genuinely...idk, pleasing or something from a medical standpoint). The weird part is that I've seen a few other people say that they've gotten similar compliments from their doctors as well. I guess some people just have a nicely shaped cervix?

Hearing the nurse at the blood drive compliment my veins makes me feel oddly proud.

And, dare I say it, a little vain.

(less proud now, knowing they say it to just about everyone. huff)

I've been told by phlebotomists, and my dental hygienist today, that I'm a really good patient, because I don't flinch at needles.

One of my younger cousins once told me I was her favorite cousin because she didn't see me as often, since we lived in different states.

People (mostly girls) tell me a lot that I have great eyebrows, and they're always so surprised/slightly jealous when I tell them that I don't pluck/wax/thread them or fill them in with makeup. Apparently they have the perfect proportions for my face and a lot of people don't have that naturally? Go figure.

I expect compliments on my hair and clothing, but "your eyebrows are like perfect" was kind of weird the first time I heard it, haha.

Recently? My eyesight. Which is weird for me, because throughout my life I always had terrible eyesight (-6.75 diopter) and wore glasses and then contact lenses until up until just a couple of years ago, when I got lasik.

Over the past year I've had several eye exams (school and work-related) and now my eyes are 20/10 and 20/15 respectively. Both the school doctors and the optometrist I went to were raving about it. So... King LASIK in Victoria, BC? A+++ would get my lenses burned again?

That both my nails and my eyebrows have a great natural shape.

I have been told by at least five strangers that I have beautiful hands and/or should be a hand model.

.... idk, man.

I was once told I had an "elegant, swan-like neck".

And my dentist & dental hygienist both told me I have a "great pain tolerance" that makes me so easy to work on.

When I was younger, the whole dentist's office staff liked to watch me get painful proedures done because they were fascinated by my pain tolerance. They complimented me a lot for that, so I guess I can understand why some people are scared of the dentist because that's a creepy compliment if I've ever heard one.

I get complimented on my fingernails every so often. I guess my nail beds are nicely shaped or something?

When I went to donate blood, I was told my veins were very nice, I guess because of their prominence. They didn't end up taking any blood though because my veins were too small for the needles they currently had, so I can't say I was particularly proud of them at the time.

I work customer service, and (due to having learned on a manual typewriter) I tend to strike the computer keys very hard, so customers can often hear me typing in the background. I guess they must not know many people who are good typists, because I think I only type somewhere around 50-60 WPM, but people often ask "Is that you??" and marvel at how fast I'm going!

Also when my husband and I went through divorce proceedings years ago (which were cancelled at the last minute, but that's another story,) we were complimented on how calmly and civilly we discussed the whole business and easily agreed on terms with the court-appointed moderator. Other people, including the attending nurse when our daughter was born, have mentioned what a good team we make.

I also get a lot of medical professionals marvelling at how much younger I look than my actual age. (I'm 43, they're always assume I'm in my 30's.) Though I'm never sure whether to take that as a compliment, per se, as they don't necessarily say I look good, just young.

My fingernails.

Apparently they naturally look like I've had a French Manicure, so I keep getting asked where I got them done.

Um.. in the womb?

It's nice to be complimented, though.
