Keep the Christ in Christmas

(Anonymous) 2014-11-07 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Saw the first Facebook post about this today.

... How trollish of me would it be to point out a, Jesus was born in September (according to Biblical Scholars), and b, we borrowed Christmas from Pagan traditions?

I'm a Christian who loves Christmas, but let people celebrate Christmas - or NOT celebrate Christmas - however they want.

IMO, if you want to say something to them, it's probably best to leave the higher criticism out of it and just talk about it being OK for people to celebrate Christmas however they want and as much or as little as they want. I think the other stuff is too easy to read as an attack on the validity of THEIR celebrations and, I don't know, it's just not the best route IMO.

I read the comments on the general meme and the people saying what I expressed came off as assholes. So yeah, I think I'll avoid that and leave it at something like "I think people can celebrate how they wish."

Facts from Biblical Scholars are not going to change anything with that sort of person. Watch almost any Reza Aslan interview about Biblical history, for example.

my usual response is "well what the hell else are we going to call it? no atheist wants to just call it 'mas' ffs"

My husband suggested Present Day once without a hint of sarcasm in his voice.

Haha... maybe a troll post asking all the Christians which Biblical passage describes how Christmas should REALLY be celebrated, because you want to have a real, authentic Christian holiday?

I second this suggestion.
