I saw it as bots in a war doing the awful things war demands of them to gain advantage, and that even the Autobots could make unsound/unsavoury decisions despite their technical moral high ground as the protagonists. Not that the show fully explored that, especially given Arcee's tendency to relearn revenge isn't a right option. I'll give it points for having things like that create repercussions for the heroes (allowing Starscream to escape for instance).

For me, it seemed like the show kept forgetting it was a kids' show (olderish, whatever), but never quite the other way either.

Definitely. Though I found TFP enjoyable, and easy to get into for someone like me with little to no background in TF lore, I really wished it had some consistency. Don't know if it would have necessarily improved the feel since it would still be full of dropped potential, and that rushed ending would still be a rushed ending.
