+1. It's not a one-size-fits-all. I don't care for woobification (but if you're in fandom, you should accept that it's a very popular trend), but I also don't care for the idea that "I had bad parents/beat addiction/insert trauma of choice and I got through it this way; therefore, any other outcome is invalid."

However, OP does says they don't like people defending Ward's actions, which I think is a fair distinction. People may still sympathize with a character who does bad things. I'm okay with that, as long as they aren't given a free pass for all their bad behaviour. I also wouldn't rule out a redemption arc for any character - but it's when the bad behaviour is handwaved away that it becomes obnoxious (see: Loki).
