Not weird at all. I wish I was around for Sherlock Holmes' death and resurrection, and for the heyday of a few fandoms I came too late for. Hearing about it just isn't the same.

Oh my gosh, I would love to see all of the angry/upset letters that got sent over Homles' death back in the day. I bet it was glorious(or really boring), but I'd still love to see it.

I'd love to see the letters in response to Emerald City of Oz... nobody died but it was about as definitive a "this is the end of the story period, now stop pestering me about it!" book ending you can find. And of course, it was not the end of the series.

I'd love to see everyone going into mourning over a fictional character. I hope Conan Doyle appreciated that, even if he probably wasn't a fan of having to bring Sherlock back to make them stop.

Oh man, if I had a time machine, that would definitely be one of my stops.

Same. I want to know what comic fen was like back then, what the discussion was (and was like). I like to think the movie had a bit of a fanfictionish reaction that would have reflected it.

My mom was a comic fan back then and read Watchman as it came out, but I don't think she was very involved in much fan discussion, so asking her about this would probably do no good. She is a big comic fan but has never been big on the whole fan community thing.

I wonder if you can dig up fanzines or letter columns from this era? I bet that would reflect some of it. It's a good quesion!

That's a fascinating idea. I mean, not even just reactions to Rorschach's death, but also peoples' reactions in the moment to something that has becoem so seminal. I don't even know how popular it was at the time - how much discussion would there have been that you could access?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if there was much.

Remember that Watchmen was a (graphic) novel for adults, and Rorshach died after the climax of the last act.

This is around the same time as an Alan Moore story where Mxyzptlk decided to be evil out of boredom and slaughtered most of Superman's supporting cast. In an "imaginary story" that was used as a coda to the Superman series to date.

It was just par for the course, really.

Things didn't quite move on the same rhythm back then; I think the reaction you're thinking of is a thing that essentially didn't exist.

Also, it's really not a case of the shocking death of a fan favorite; Rorschach's weird following only arose gradually, as people who were both comics fans and pseudo-Objectivists found each other. Then, too, he always had to die, it was just a question of when.

Then, too, he always had to die, it was just a question of when.

But...doesn't this describe every human being in existence?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
I don't find that too weird - I mean, there are reports of people throwing the chapter of 'The Old Curiosity Shop' where Little Nell dies out the windows of trains. That would have been hilarious to witness too. I feel the same way about Jo/Laurie getting sunk in Little Women, Sherlock Holmes's death and resurrection etc.

Also, your example is great. Watchmen is an amazing graphic novel, it would be so interesting to see dpfandom react in real time to it.

That would definitely be interesting to see, along with other moments people have mentioned. I have to admit, I'm a bit disappointed that no one has popped in with a firsthand account of what did go down, though fandomsecrets might skew a bit too young for that.

Very interesting. I'd like to know too now.
