They are! They are adorable robot scientist friends. And the one on the left is female, which is an extreme rarity for Transformers. Unfortunately, basically all the pairings involving the one on the right lost a lot of their fans very quickly when it turned out he was a Decepticon spy.

Given that the lost light houses assassins, murderers, a rapist, and a whole manner of the deranged and broken, I don't know why "decepticon spy" has caused people to react so badly.

(Although it did pretty much ruin my Perceptor/Brainstorm otp.)

MTMTE having adorable robots makes me want to skip the idw and marvel comics I'm going through for lore reasons. Tailgate and tears will be my prize when I do catch up.

James Roberts is like the best prize ever. There are very few comic writers I want to meet, but he is one. I just want to thank him for writing with such precision and care, both to the narrative and to the characters.

And for IDW Skids. I really want to thank him for Skids.

I've only read a few of the issues and the most recent, and it was like reading a television space opera ♥ Obviously a different feel and aim from TF comics in the 80's, and I love their world building too, but even the earlier IDWs don't read the particularly careful way Roberts do afaik. I also don't know how much to credit the artists for the paneling, because direction is also wonderful.

Roberts got his start writing fanfic (and has been fairly open about that, it's not like it's a carefully-kept secret). He's coming at it from the perspective of someone who loved Transformers enough to write an entire novel set in that universe even before he was getting paid to do it. Let's just say I am not at all surprised that his work comes off as incredibly careful and lovely.

By all accounts Roberts works extremely closely with his artists to get what he wants. If he wants a certain panel or page to have a certain ambiance, they will know.

He and Milne seem to have one another figured out, though. The backup artists are never untalented, but nothing is quite as smooth when Milne isn't there.

I wasn't particularly shocked. Not because I knew, but because I'm fairly sure Brainstorm is on no side except that of unrestricted experimentation, and would choose the faction that allowed the most of that.

I'm reminded of that one person who didn't realize that Rung and Kaon were different people until they'd actually started reading the comic. Apparently they figured at some point Rung had gotten tortured and lost his eyes and turned evil.
