Would you feel bad for this?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Buying a physical book and then downloading an ebook version of the same book to read on an e-reader.

not in the least

I've done it. It doesn't make me feel bad to do so.

Nope.

Not even a little bit

Not really, and I usually avoid pirating for ethical reasons. But if you bought it once, you've already financially supported the writer... I'd still feel a little bad about it myself, but less bad if I had taken it without paying the author at all.

I've bought TV shows and then downloaded pirated copies. (I can get pirated copies within a few hours of airing on the East Coast, less if it's a popular show; the TV shows take 24 hours to a week to hit legal channels.) No, I wouldn't feel bad about what you're doing.

Nah, not particularly.

Nothing wrong with it. So much better having a search bar for the one thing you're looking for instead of leafing through paper.

"Nothing wrong with it."

Well, except for that fact that it's still technically illegal. Purchase of a print copy does not typically come with an ebook license (unfortunately)...and even if it did, acquiring it from an unauthorized source would still be verboten.

Nah, in fact I've done this before. In many places (including where I live) it's legal to have a digital copy of something you purchased for personal use. (This was originally intended to say that yes, if you owned a CD of something, you were legally entitled to make a tape of it to play in your car instead of having to buy a tape as well as the recording industry had contended. You are also allowed to make copies of your own wedding photos, even if they were taken by a professional.)

I do it the other way round: I download it first then buy it if I liked it. This way I only support people who deserve it imo.

I've done that before

both times it was because I misplaced the book

Nope! If I'm buying hard copy, you bet your butt I'm finding a digital one and putting it on everything within arm's reach. Sometimes it feels like I only buy the printed one so I can look at it on a shelf though.

No, I've done this with some of the books I own.

I've done it before (not all that often because I prefer reading out of a physical book), and I don't see anything terribly wrong with it, but it still makes me feel guilty. :(

(But since I've already bought it once, I don't let it make me feel too bad. Like, there are plenty of films I buy on DVD/Blu-Ray but don't download the digital copy for because it's iTunes. I don't use iTunes, so if I want a digital copy I'll get it elsewhere.)

I've done it and it doesn't really bother me. I just don't feel that bad about downloading a copy of a book because I left my other copy at my parents' house.

Re: Would you feel bad for this?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, I already bought the book.

Re: Would you feel bad for this?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Though I'd probably just buy the ebook version in the first place if it was available.

Re: Would you feel bad for this?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I've done it with music. I'm literally too lazy to get a CD off a shelf two feet away from me to rip when I can just download a copy. I do it less with books, but if there's an ebook version of idk, something I have in storage and don't have easy access to then I would.

However, I realize that every time I do that I'm adding to the piracy figures and potentially making them, and the hits for torrent sites etc. inflate which in turn is ammo for music companies and co. when they start citing statistics.

So on the "I've already bought this, how is it different to ripping from the hard copy I own?" side no. On the more nebulous side of things where I don't necessarily want to support piracy via something I've actually bought legitimately but might be seen as doing so anyway... not 'bad' per se, but conflicted.

I sometimes do this with TV shows/movies. I'll buy the DVDs and download it because it's easier to carry my hard drive than the stacks of DVDs when I go on vacation.

I like having an ebook version especially for reference.

I'd feel bad about being the type of person who has an ereader, but not for piracy to fill it.
