it depends on a lot of factors (such as laws specific to certain states), but registered sex offenders are generally restricted from living too closely to schools and such and many are prohibited from living in the same house as a minor. it's kind of impossible to keep them away from kids in general though, since...well, kids are everywhere. I imagine he's still on probation though, so he's probably monitored to an extent.

the prison sentence also depends on a lot of factors. in extreme cases, the maximum penalty is actually life in prison. and then there are some assholes who can weasel out of it with no jail time at all

Sex offender registries remain a despicable human rights abuse.

People think they're used for, as you say, keeping convicted child molesters away from children. In practice, they're used to render you functionally homeless for life if you moon a cop.

Not saying there aren't flaws in the system (and there are, no doubt), but sex offender registries ARE a useful tool when you can find out if there's an actual molestor living near you are any of your family members.

Nah. They're predicated on a lot of flatly false myths about sex offenders being incurable recidivists. They're fear-based nonsense that ruins people's lives to serve cowardice and hatred based on lies. But that's what you get when you decide to piss on people's rights.

Depending on the state, a person can land on a sex offender list for stuff as petty as public urination. For a society that has no problem letting large numbers of rapists go completely unpunished ("but it's just her word against his," piles of rape kits sitting ignored in storage, assorted forms of victim blaming, celebrities like Woody Allen getting a free pass no matter how much evidence exists) this seems pretty extreme.

I read about one case where a seventeen year old boy landed on a sex offender list for life because a couple of kids with a known history of bullying him tossed him into a girls' locker room.

Child molesters like the guy in the secret are dangerous and should be monitored, but not everyone who makes the list has done anything nearly worthy of being lumped in with them. And plenty of dangerous people are never even charged because they have money and/or power.

So yes, I would say that sex offender lists are a human rights violation. Our justice system needs a major overhaul. This is but one symptom.

So don't fucking moon a cop, idiot.

Bet you're sorry you mooned that cop, eh?
