What does this mean, exactly? Ableist in what way? It's set in the early fifties, so it's not like it's going to be a festival of political correctness or anything.
ahs spoilers
(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 02:54 am (UTC)(link)The main cast is made up of people dressed up as disabled people, whereas the disabled cast members are secondary characters with exploitative, stereotypical plots.
A mentally disabled serial killer is revealed to have turned into a murderer because the mean, bitter, jealous freaks at his old carnival falsely accused him of pedophilia. You wrote a role for a little person where they play an angry, bitter pervert? Groundbreaking.
It's historical accuracy to portray ableism. Disabled people are treated like shit today, and it was even worse in the time the show is set it. But that's not what is being portrayed in the show.
It is ableism to turn your disabled characters into rapists and murderers for shock value and to make your story gritty and gray, all while jerking off to how progressive you are for casting a handful of real disabled actors (who will almost undoubtedly be killed off over the course of the show anyways, survived only by ablebodied actors in bad prosthetics) in minor roles.
The worst part is that there are easy fixes for a lot of the big issues, but Ryan Murphy just doesn't give a shit about disabled people beyond the brownie points he gets for acknowledging their existence.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 04:19 am (UTC)(link)And there's also the issue of whether everyone involved in the orgy knew everything.
If they knew she was kidnapped by Elsa and knew she didn't even consent to get high in the first place, then yeah, that's gang rape.
If they didn't, then things get murky because maybe Elsa (and let's be honest here, she's capable of that) made them think the nurse liked getting high and having orgies.
Re: ahs spoilers
(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)The manipulation started after the nurse smoked the opium. Of course, they don't show whether said nurse knew what she was smoking. Many people have decided to be daring and try a 'taboo' new experience(s) only severely regret them after. I certainly don't condone rape of any kind. I didn't interpret that scene that way. She accused rape and Elsa taunted her with the film evidence. Whether she was raped or not is is vaguely referenced and up to interpretation IMO. I've had morning-after regrets while under the influence. I lost my virginity to someone after we smoked weed. One second we were making out and then, Umm... yeah I just had sex and it was uninspiring. As much as I wanted to have made a better choice, I accepted that I made a poor one.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 04:32 am (UTC)(link)Also, the worst, most disgusting, most terrifying person in the show is a young able-bodied white man. So.
OP

Well, yes, that's not terribly cool, i suppose, but they also have a main core of actors/actresses that are cast in every season, and they're going to be the 'main' characters, no matter what.
The bulk of the 'freak show' people *are* actual people with physical disabilities, though, to my knowledge.
