I don't care for the ship at all, but if that's how the fandom characterizes Tony in the relationship, then I really don't like it.

Especially since Tony doesn't pull shit like that on Pepper. Why would he do it to Steve?

Probably because Tony goes out of his way to antagonize Steve (for fun or out of jealousy, I guess). The dynamic he has with Steve is nothing like the one he shares with Pepper.
