I think a lot of it is comic Steve/Tony fans projecting their love onto MCU Steve/Tony (especially since a lot of MCU Steve/Tony fic came out way before Avengers was even in theaters) and others were just shipping it because they thought both characters were hot. I'm really glad its popularity is cooling off though; I hate MCU Steve/Tony.

Have you seen the "leaked" scene of Steve and Tony though? It's not particularly romantic but it's going to fuel the shippers -- I'd bet on that. So I wouldn't bet on the pairing continuing to cool off. If anything it's gonna pick up steam again.

That's true. I know it'll probably pick up once Age of Ultron comes out, but I'm going to enjoy the current lull as long as I can.
