What are some expressions you have misunderstood), OR expressions you simply didn't know the meaning of? And did you find out before or after you misused them in front of someone?

I thought "burning the midnight oil" referred to drinking with friends until really late either because something was wrong or because no one had anything better to do.

i only recently learned how to use i.e. and e.g.

i then proceeded to use them in all my essays. my esl teachers were like "wow where did you learn that, it's very impressive" but there was no way i was gonna tell them i came across it on reddit

My parents sometimes tease me that when I was a kid I didn't understand the saying "Eine Kuh macht muh; viele Kühe machen Mühe." It's a pretty simple play on words and translates to "One cow makes moo, many cows make labor" but apparently left me completely confused.

for some reason I used to think "take it with a grain of salt" was actually "take it with a grain of sand" and I would correct people about it when I was in elementary school

I used to think the works and the runs were the same thing.
