Metal Gear Solid

[personal profile] caeliluminar 2014-11-08 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured this is as good a place as any, so: I just got into the MGS series a few weeks ago and have been blasting through the games since then. I've played MGS4, MGS2, MGS1 up until the Psycho Mantis fight now, and am currently at the part in MGS3 where Snake disguises himself as Raikov, but I'm playing MGS3 with a friend, so I can't play it as fast as the others.

How much do I have left in MGS3 from that part on? And would starting MGS: Peace Walker now spoil me anything for what I have left of MGS3? I know The Boss is going to die, and Snake will probably lose his eye at some point, and I don't know if he'll be called Big Boss yet in MGS3 or not. I just want more MGS, but I want to avoid spoilers for what little I can since I've played the series in such a backwards order. (And, does Ocelot show up in Peace Walker at all? He's fun to watch.)

Um, also, if anyone has recs for any fics or other fan stuff for the series, that would be appreciated (although please warn if they spoil what I haven't played yet).

The majority of the endgame is set on the base, but be ready for A) a lot of very long cutscenes, and 2) a couple of very tough boss fights in close succession.

And some weirdness, but it's not MGS without weirdness.

You've definitely played them all out of order, though...

I know. I didn't plan on playing the whole series when I started with MGS4 (I borrowed it from work on a whim), but then I got hooked. I can't get enough of the weirdness, although MGS4 has been my least favourite so far, except for the game mechanics.

Yeah, I figured.

MGS3 is my personal favourite. Peace Walker... not so much.

If you have a PSP or a PS Vita try and get Portable Ops, I found that to be a much better game than Peace Walker.

Sadly, I don't. I just have the HD collection containing MGS3, MGS2, and Peace Walker. MGS3 is my favourite, too, which is mostly why I'm craving another game with that Snake as the PC. And a friend said that Peace Walker will be important for Phantom Pain.

It will be but that doesn't make it any less of a drag IMO.

Interestingly, I'm about to start the series at MGR:R.
Cool icon BTW, Orpheus is the best.

Hah, I've also started MGR:R, but it doesn't feel like a MGS game at all. It's cool, though. Also, I'm stuck at a boss fight because the game is a bit on the hard side.

And Orpheus is the best :)

It's not supposed to be a MGS game. It's a MGR game.

I don't remember how much you have left (maybe a forth?), but I'd say finish MGS3 before starting Peace Walker. Or just skip Peace Walker because Peace Walker is incredibly disappointing (and frustrating, personally). MGS3 is by far my favorite game in the series, but Peace Walker is best played after it. (IIRC, Ocelot is only briefly mentioned in Peace Walker. :( )

If you're into Snake/Otacon I like Crikey's stuff.. Paradigm Shift is one of my favorites.

Also, I know that Rising isn't a normal Metal Gear game, but I fucking adore it. It has the same bizarre storyline and characters with some amazing bosses and a completely different play style. It's like a roller-coaster of insanity and I love it.

Pity, I was hoping for Peace Walker to be as good as the others to fill my need for more MGS. Guess playing Rising while waiting for an opportunity to finish MGS3 would be more satisfying. It's just so hard, and I don't want to decrease the difficulty, and I'll need to learn how to do things the game isn't interested in teaching me.

And thanks, after MGS2 I'm very into Snake/Otacon, and managed to find very little on AO3. Also Big Boss/Ocelot, but looking for that while avoiding spoilers for MGS3 was too challenging.

It's sad, but there's nothing in particular that stands out about Peace Walker. It just isn't on the same level as the other MGS games, not even Sons of Liberty (which a lot of people despise because Raiden, but tbh I enjoyed it). If you love the series that much, maybe give it a go (as it will be important for Phantom Pain, and even if the game on a whole is kind of a drag to play, Kaz is interesting), but it isn't the same imo. (You could probably get by with watching some vids on youtube or reading the wiki if you don't actually enjoy it. Same for Rising, although I had a lot of fun with Rising despite its difficulty. Rising is just one of those games you have to be persistent with if you want to beat. It can be frustrating, but I also found it rewarding. YMMV, though!)

Ah, I feel you. Good MGS fic is hard to find, but there is some out there. Wish I could find the link to this other author I loved but I haven't seen it in years. :( They wrote some good Snake/Otacon, too.

Big Boss/Ocelot is also a favorite of mine, but I haven't seen much of it. I'm hoping more of it gets written after Phantom Pain is released. Honestly, I don't know how it didn't get more popular considering Ocelot's massive obsession with Big Boss. (Eva even tells Boss he has a crush, then there's...well, the whole of MGS4.) I DID have a hilarious (and cracky) fic bookmarked where Ocelot kept trying to have sex with Big Boss and creating time paradoxes but now I can't find it. (I think the author deleted their journal.)
