That is an excellent way to put it.

Yeah, but fanfic writers describe characters as having "pelts" in smutty slash fics all the time even when they're just kinda hairy. I couldn't count the number of times I've read K/S describing Spock's "luscious pelt" and stuff. It should be on the Big List of Kirk/Spock Cliches (http://www.invisibleplanets.com/kirk_spock/KSCliches.htm) ;)
