Some of it was 616 Stony fans, but I think the bulk of MCU Stony shippers before and after The Avengers were actually people who have never read the comics but saw the primers for what their relationship was like there and decided that it was going to be their dudeslash ship du jour. And when their actual dynamic in the movie didn't fit the dynamic they'd built up in their heads, they just continued on writing it anyway.
