I'm sure there are plenty of places to find it that know more than I do, but basically, as I understand it, due in part to Gene being old and in poor health and also having struggled with substance abuse in his life, there was a ton of behind the scenes power struggles, and in particular Gene's lawyer essentially trying to take over the show and being a general piece of shit to everyone. Also Rick Berman being an ass, etc.

It's less entertaining than TOS behind the scenes shenanigans, but at least the show got through it.

Thanks for the mini-recap - I'll see if my Google skills can dredge up anything, but in my past experience, LJ communities were the best places to find the behind-the-scenes gossip. Fingers crossed!
