I hate the premise for the reasons you mentioned (too depressing, no hope, etc), which is why I don't read or watch it. I guess that's what most of the people who feel like that do which is why you never see them enter in discussions about that show: they don't care, because they don't read or watch and don't go looking to enter discussions or question people's tastes.
