I used to be a huge fan of this series. It was so different and refreshing and I even liked the whole realism-gloom of it and the sense of jeopardy. I liked the cast, I liked the decent representation of take-no-shit female characters, I even liked the Everyone's A Titan! stuff. I didn't even care that there were batshit parts of the fandom, which is normally an instant turn-off for me, I enjoyed this thing enough to ignore it.

Past tense. The manga's totally jumped the shark in the past year or so. Everything's Levi's angsty past and Historia's angsty past that've been going on forever with little regards to plot pacing, and it manages to be insufferably dull and insufferably ridiculous at the same time which is quite a feat. And right now, Everyone's A Titan! is becoming a huge joke. Isayama's lost the plot, quite literally.

Sometimes I wonder if people are still gushing over it (I'll admit I don't see that much these days) because it's The Thing To Be Seen Gushing Over in some anime/manga circles.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The focus on Levi and Historia was terrible. They're two of the least interesting characters in the manga to me.

AYRT

Call me cynical but it's funny how Levi's backstory only became relevant in relation to how much fandom fawns over him.

Levi's boring as fuck, and the Historia storyline would've been more interesting if it'd been happening to any other character but her. The past year has been predictable melodrama, nothing else.

Tell me about it. I mean, now that he's become super popular, you gotta shove him into everything. I don't and will never get his appeal. He's dull as shit and his personality is just so bland. He is just generic in every way.

Seriously. Historia is easily the blandest character of the bunch. Maybe, just maybe if this persobality change had happened sooner and the reveal as well, it might have changed my opinion on her. But as it is, it does nothing to make her interesting as a character.

The reveal that Eren had eaten his father was just so fucking predictable. The angst because of it is going to be unbearable.

Re: Spoilers for Recent AoT Chapters

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get his popularity either. Well, no, I do but I think it's dumb over-hyped "Kyaaaaa! So kakkoii the way he kicked Eren in the teeth that time!" fangirling. But that stuff I could cheerfully ignore. When his idolization is slipping over into canon too, not so much.

I loved the Krista/Ymir relationship and early on I had high hopes for Historia to go against the stereotypical princess role--which she had even before her family history came to light--and become kickass in her own right, but I'd literally have chosen ANYONE else to have that role Sasha or Connie, or even Jean in that reveal would've been amazing.

Not sure what I LOLed over most with the newest chapter, Eren's father--is there anyone who didn't see that coming?--and the whole Brady Bunch of Shifters thing, or torture methods involving making the guy eat his own shit.

People complain about the early art (and it was awful) but at least the story had some kind of cohesive pace to it and the gloom/despair while being in your face was never OTT bordering on ridiculous. It had a grittiness to it that's been replaced by... idk, whatever new edgy thing that makes no sense Isayama can think of to toss in.

Re: Spoilers for Recent AoT Chapters

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I sort of do as well, I suppose. He's this badass, but that's all there is. There's just this aloof, cold personality to go with it. It's been done to death and he brings nothing new to the table. He's just flat. And that wouldn't be a necessarily be a bad thing, if there was something interesting aboet him to grab onto but there's nothing.

I'll be honest, I don't care for the Krista/Ymir relationship. Historia never stood out as a character for me and tbh, the fact that Ymir was so attached to her was mindboggling. And when Ymir was going to side with Reiner and Bertolt just for Historia's sake iirc, it made me start to dislike Ymir. The fact that Ymir is so utterly attached to her just makes me shake my head. Why must she have such terrible taste in women? Different strokes, I suppose.

It would have been better if someone else had been revealed to be the lobg lost royal family member. I'd gone with Connie. Poor kid can't catch a break.

Oh my god, I'm just now reading the new chapter. Did this became a edgy h-manga or something? Where the fuck did that scene come from? It's like something of a hentai. Wow. I just can't with this manga. I'm still stuck on that scene. Those little lace things on his legs. What the hell.

Agreed. The manga has gone a bit loony. At least the first part seemed like Isayama had a plan and an idea of where to go. To think that we have three more tears of this. Wonder how crazy it will be in a year from now.

Re: Spoilers for Recent AoT Chapters

(Anonymous) 2014-11-10 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I guess his shady past was supposed to be the interesting thing about him? And no doubt it's boosted his woobie status, so plenty of people enjoyed it but it left me pretty flat.

I loved Krista/Ymir as this opposites attract thing. I liked the idea of Ymir's influence eventually making Krista more badass and with her own agency/personality, and Krista's influence bringing out vulnerability in Ymir. I do still love it, but I feel there's so much lost potential with the way the plot's gone in the last year.

LOL I saw the spoilers and thought "Nah, photoshop." I'm not squicked by that sort of thing but it was just so left field and jarring. All the torture we've seen before has been gritty and realistic and sometimes quite subtle. This was like a Human Centipede sledgehammer. I don't think laughing hysterically was the reaction Isayama wanted, somehow.

Three years, really? This time last year I'd have been delighted. Now I just smh. I haven't seen a series implode as badly as this for a long time.

Re: Spoilers for Recent AoT Chapters

(Anonymous) 2014-11-10 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even know anymore tbh. I don't think Isayama knows what to do woth Levi either.

Huh, I've never thought of Krista/Ymir like that. I suppose I was just too put off by the writing of them, pratically Krista, that I just didn't see it. I can see why you ship them now. That would have been a fantastic way to develop Krista as a character and it would have been so much vetter than what we got. Thank you for the new perspective, anon. :)

I'm not squicked out by that sort of thing ether, but holy shit, I was nor expecting that. I'm still hung up over it, ngl. Zackly is one sadistic, kinky fucking bastard. Wonder what the hell Isayama was watching/reading when he thought of putting that in. Just wow.

Yep, in about three years. Here's the source. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-09-22/attack-on-titan-creator-isayama-manga-to-end-in-about-3-years/.79025

I wonder how much more of a trainwreck this can become. I mean, it's obvious that he's got no idea where to go with this.

Re: Spoilers for Recent AoT Chapters

(Anonymous) 2014-11-10 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome! I suspect that what I shipped was probably their potential rather that what we were actually given in canon, but yeah, I love the idea of it. You could see shades of it in their flashback and Castle Utgard scenes, where you could see both of them possibly re-evaluating their perspectives because of the other, but it just goes nowhere. Instead we get this "omg secret identity guise!" thing, which is ironic that it's done badly because I never thought the Titan secret identities were handled badly at all. I could've been more forgiving back then though.

I still start laughing when I think of that scene. I just can't take it seriously. I'm laughing even more now because I'm thinking of OP expecting superduper grimmness when they read and seeing that crack instead.

The thing is, the stuff that's happening now has most likely been (with the odd room for tweaking as things progress) been planned out for a while, and it's still a total mess in terms of the execution and the pacing. I hold out no hope whatsoever for stuff that hasn't even been planned out yet. I also have doubts about any series that magically gets longer than its natural lifespan due to popularity because the quality always suffers, but that's probably another rant, LOL.

It all still makes me feel bad though, because I used to be the exact sort of person this secret's OP would've hated and I sort of wish I was again but the series is too far gone into crazy for that.

Re: Spoilers for Recent AoT Chapters

(Anonymous) 2014-11-10 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
It really does seem like a compelling ship when put that way. It's the kind of ship.that I can get behind. Now that you've pointed it out, I'm skimming over the Castle Utgard scenes. It was so good and it was such a damn shame that it didn't develop the characters like it looked it was going to. Ugh, now that you've pointed it out, I can't get over my disappointment for the wasted potential for these two. The less said about the Historia reveal, the better. Instead of getting decent character development through everything else she went through, we get it from that.

I can't either. It is just utterly ridiculous in every way imaginable and then some. I mean for god's sake, he is going to be humiliated in front of the public like that. It is so over the top. It just keeps on giving. After the Armin stuff and this, I gotta wonder about Isayama.

If this stuff was planned then he really dropped the ball. It's barely keeping my interest anymore. Well, not for the right reasons anyway. I've no idea where hesgoing with it anymore. Also, ehere the fuck is Beast Titan? Haven't seen him in a while.

lmao, I just feel kind of bad for Eren (I assume he didn't do it consciously). Wasn't he already fucked up enough?

I feel a bit sorry for him, but other than finding it predictable I also found it hilarious. I can't put my finger on why.

Re: Spoilers for Recent AoT Chapters

I understand what you mean. There's been this mystery about his father this whole time where it's like "Where the fuck is that dude?" and then finally now you're like "lol oh, I guess Eren just fucking ate his dad." And Eren has probably been thinking about his dad all this time wondering where the hell he is and what's up with the stupid key and he didn't know that he fucking ate him until recently. It's pretty funny in a terrible kind of way.

And I think you and the anone below have made me realize why I found it so hilarious. That and Eren's whole character has been defined by his hatred of the titans because they ate his mother. It is beyond funny that it turns out he ate his fucking dad. He became even more of what he hates.

DA

The conflict of that could be amazing though, if it was played right. The sad part is I don't trust Isayama not to fuck it up and just turn it into some wangstfest instead.

I guess at least Eren didn't shit out his dad and was forced to eat him again. /shot

I'm totally in agreement with you there. In the hands of a better writer, the fallout and the struggle to reconcile that fact with how he's felt about the titans so far would be awesome. But instead, we're probably going to get wangst and little to no exploration of it. I'm not looking forward to the wangst.

Stop it. You're going to make me picture it all over again, but this time with Eren.

It could be great. It'd mess around with the Hunted becomes the Hunter trope, and there are some potentially fascinating psychological aspects of it. But not with Isayama at the helm, I fear. Pretty much I just envision lots more Eren screaming and snarling.

Hell no. I'm getting all the mileage I can out of AoT shit jokes. It's the gift that keeps on giving!

The psychological aspect and the impact it could have on Eren mental state are what fascinate me the most. Ugh, why did Isayama have to write this series? If only it were in the hands of someone else.

It truly is. I'm still chuckling at the absurdity of ir. Alright, anon, give me your best.

Honestly, 12-18 months ago I'd have been more confident in him handling it but lately the story as a whole seems to be too much for him to handle. It feels like it's crumpling under its own weight and ambition.

I'm sorry that's terrible.

Yeah, same. It's a shame because it was pretty good a year or so ago.

FWIW, I enjoyed it. Thanks anon. :)

I haven't really been keeping up with the manga too much, so I didn't really see that coming. The jarringness of it (for me, anyway) makes it beyond funny. I can't stop imagining how he would tell Mikasa and Armin that he ate his father "Hey guys, remember how my dad disappeared and we all thought he was a douchebag? Yeaaaaaah, it turns out that I ate him..." What the fuck is going on in this manga

Thank you anon, that little scenario just makes it even more funny. That conversation is going to be priceless.

I know, right? Like the anon from.above pointed out, there's so much shit coming out of left field. Like this. http://readms.com/r/attack_on_titan/63/2598/24 What is Isayama on?
