"I've never seen an author quietly hold updates hostage"

There's an author in one of my fandoms that does that. They update frequently when they get many comments, but stop updating completely when they don't get as many.
Once people start complaining about the lack of updates and the number of comments increases, they update immediately and include an excuse for the lack of updates. Since this has happened about five or six time it's pretty obvious what they're doing.
