Of course it's been going on forever. Game developers probably have been emptying their death-threat-spam folder for a long, long time by now. But they mostly weren't women, so nobody cared.

No, the reason nobody cared was because they hadn't had an organized movement targeting them, then going after their friends, family, and anyone else who objected. GG is completely different in size, scope, and organization to the usual gaggle of trolls and unhinged individuals who act in isolation.
