I've said it before and I'll say it again: the show could have been awesome, if Eren had actually died instead of simply having magic titan-transforming powers. The show could have focused on Mikasa and Armin surviving without him, and gone an entirely different route. Instead...typical shounen. /still annoyed

It's a shounen.
If you don't want to see shounen tropes, better to read something that it's not shounen.

That would've been a twist, sure. But whereas it would've been shocking and attention-grabbing, what after? I don't think the story could carry itself without Eren. Mikasa just doesn't have enough development, she'd need something beyond "look at this OP'd girl". And I actually find Eren interesting enough for a shounen protagonist, so meh.
