I'm a lesbian who reads mostly m/m fic, even though my favorite ships are f/f. I do it because my poison of choice is hurt/comfort, but I don't trust most authors to write about female characters being hurt without making it uncomfortable or even vaguely exploitative.

Also, for those of us who got into fandom very young or otherwise before we figured out our sexuality, it may be a habit from when we thought we were straight. (This also sometimes goes for lgbt m/f shippers, though clearly that isn't the case for OP.)

Hmmm, I'm a big H/C fan myself, and write a lot of het for it. In fandom, however, I have a tendency to have the male character get hurt (unless I'm doing psychological pain, and then all bets are off).
