It's not the first anime to be depressing and without hope, it's not doing it any more than the others. Most anime has depressing bits at least, and there are a lot of sad endings.

It's certainly not the only piece of media to present a somewhat hopeless setting. You could say the same thing about Game of Thrones, for example, but that show has more nudity and better characters. I'm guessing you're not a fan of dystopias either, but a lot of people like those.
