And it had similar aesthetics, from what I've seen.

Eh, kind of. Burton's aesthetic pulls somewhat from the Victorian era (note the "somewhat") so you can see similarities between him and the original design from the musical. But his particular flourishes- the spirals, the black and white stripes, the sepia/black and white palette- weren't present in any production of the musical I've seen.
