On that note, OP, FWIW it's pretty free of wank atm. Seriously, I was scared of it getting shitty like half the stuff in fandom ended up getting shitty (even the things I loved - maybe especially the things I loved, because I cared enough to be upset when they did), but so far it's going fine. There's still a few days left.

To be fair, while I love the world, I was never really in the fandom. The reason is because I only got into it in my first year of college, and I sort of expected the fanbase to be much younger than me than average. Also, much of my fandom involvement is fic-based, and I don't really "ship" people in Harry Potter so much, except maybe Fleur and Bill a little.

I later found out some part of the fandom can be shitty and I never regretted not getting in. I fel the sme about A:TLA, really - loved the canon, don't feel the need for much fandom participation.

About the only way you can be a bad fan of something is by being shitty to the creator or to other fans.

Which is what part of the HP fandom is doing and has been doing.*

So nobody can blame you for not wanting part of that.

Keeping ignoring it and don't feel bad. This reunion is a fairly small group of people who, like most people in any large fandom, think their part of it was the most relevant/important/only part of it. Hard for me to remember HP fandom very fondly considering most of the people it elevated were awful.

Not being sarcastic - have you actually been? While there do seem to be a majority of shippers of certain pairings, there's still more diversity than you might think. It's not that small, either.

I don't think the HP fandom is that diverse in terms of who it considers to be influential or relevant, particularly on LJ/tumblr. This is a small part of a huge fandom, the majority of which aren't fic writers/artists/meta commentators and never have been.
