I am finally getting glasses

[personal profile] tasogare_n_hime 2014-11-12 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
That I have needed for at least a few years. After weeks of telling my parents to go ahead and set up an eye appointment for me the next time they went, because I am getting nearsighted, they were shocked today to find out I am getting nearsighted.

My parents awesome, but sometimes you just about have to nail an idea to their heads before it will stick.

Even though my glasses won't be getting here for at least a week, I did buy the only hard glasses case they had that looked like a game controller. XD

what, are they like Emmeline's father from Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel, who's in complete denial about his daughter's need for glasses and has some vague notion that if she doesn't "give in" and wear them, her eyes will improve?

It was more a combination of things going in one ear and out the other, them being forgetful about stuff, and both had this weird idea that because they need reading glasses, that I would need them too, and that would some how fix the longer distance vision problem I've been having. They can be weird like that.

If I had been having a problem reading, using the computer, and all that I'd have gotten an eye exam much sooner.

Glad you're finally getting your glasses. I've worn them since I was about 8, and once had to do without mine for over a week, which was absolutely miserable; I can't even imagine needing them for years with no relief.

It will definitely make shopping, and changing TV channels less frustrating.
I'm going to have to get used to how I look in glasses, but I found I pair I think look really good on me.

Wait till you put them on and realize how far away you can recognize people! I hated having to get glasses when I was in school, but it was amazing to be able to tell people apart when they were clear at the other end of the hallway.

Wow, sounds like your parents were in denial. I don't understand why they were so against the idea that you might need glasses, but I'm glad they finally listened to you.

Hopefully you'll like your glasses! (Also, that case sounds awesome. You should post a link or take a picture!)

They weren't, they just had weird ideas about how the problem I had could be fixed. The possibility of me needing an exam and getting glasses is something that has come up a few times over past few years.
Until recently it was never really an issue. I never had a problem with reading, working on the computer, and going about my day to day life. After several years of not being able to drive,(due to emotional reasons, it's a depressing story.) I've finally gotten to the point I feel I can try to drive again, and I definitely wanted to get an eye exam before I tried. The weeks of repeatedly telling my parents to get me an appointment was to make sure they wouldn't forget. Dad in particular is terrible about things like that, and I sadly take after him in that rearguard.

Ah, well, it's unfortunate that it kept being put off, but I've been in that situation. Sometimes you know something needs to be done but you have a hard time getting around to it, and if you're forgetful that makes it all the harder. Good luck on the driving! I hope the glasses help and you feel comfortable doing it again.

Been there! My parents were also just sure it was 'not that bad' since they both had only very mild near sightedness (-1 or so). Took ages to convince them that -5 was serious business and I needed glasses not just 'for the blackboard' or 'for movies' but all. the. fucking. time. :/

By the by, as somebody with stupidly bad vision who wears them pretty much unless I'm sleeping, may I recommend zennioptical to you - they're great for ordering spare pairs or affordable 'fashion' frames. Variety of things makes having to wear them a lot more palatable.
