It's a move which will almost never work, puts you in a worse position, and is inferior to other obvious choices - a punch to the throat being similar but more effective and likley to work.
If it's promoted it shows that the person teaching you doesn't actually understand the fundamentals. And that's common, you've got so much mythology built up around things like this, just look at how krav maga gets turned into some magic ninjitsu by people who think their are secret moves which are super effective but not 'allowed' in regular fights.
Which just isn't true, you want to learn how to dfend yourself you go to MMA or the military, who have a clear focus on basic striking and a variety of grappling holds.
Re: Terrible advice thread
The self-defense course we were taught in middle school was pretty decent. At least two women/girls (that I know of) in my grade successfully used it to disable and escape from attackers. It taught shit like breaking insteps, gouging eyes, breaking finger bones and biting to break holds, throat strikes - with an emphasis on the intent to temporarily disable and escape, not "win" the "fight" - none of which MMA is going to teach you because you can't use them.
Agreed on everything else, though.
Re: Terrible advice thread
I've found that MMA covers the fundamentals for breaking and escaping from holds very well, and more then that - the ability to get punched in the face by someone stronger then you and learn how to not completely freak out.
The rest does sound useful (I was going to mention bringing your heel down onto someones instep or knee as other examples of moves that actually work), but I'm curious how much actual pracitcal training do you get, and how much gets retained in a high stress situation?
The few times I've got into a proper roll about that got me off guard I regressed to the most base fundamentals.
Re: Terrible advice thread
They actually had grown men come in for us to practice on and get used to being held/grabbed/pinned by someone that much larger and stronger than us and realize there were only so many things we could do. We weren't allowed to hurt them, obviously.
But under a high stress situation, how much does a couple of months in middle school get retained? Well one of the girls attacked was in my broader circle of friends, and when a man grabbed her from behind on a jogging trail near the high school a few years later, she broke his instep, fled, and called the cops. He was still limping through the woods when they got there. She said she reacted that way instantly, because it was her only frame of reference for being violently grabbed from behind; i.e. it was the only thing she knew how to do. These aren't complicated fighting forms, right.
I know I've mentioned it on here before, but the one time someone tried to mug me and I reacted with my football training, no less, to fake, spin, and run away with a huge headstart, well, I last played that when I was a child, even before middle school. The body seems to remember better than the mind does.
