Why is it okay...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
...to talk about the self-centeredness and echo chamber qualities of tumblr, but the minute you say "wow this person on tumblr probably needs to get some perspective and mature," you're accused of lacking empathy?

I'd wager because there's a difference between observing tendencies on a social medium as a whole and singling out one person?

But how can there be a trend if there aren't individuals who are doing these things?

Re: Why is it okay...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Because everybody in this world lacks empathy these days.

We perceive things differently when they're general comments versus when they're comments about a specific person

Also, social interaction on the Internet, in general, seems to tend towards extremes, towards seeing everything as an attack, towards translating all differences into fights, etc. So there's that as well.

Probably because individual attacks have a personal component to them. For example: "teenagers are so worthless and lazy" versus "Joe is so worthless and lazy".

But what if Joe really is worthless and lazy?

I mean, you may be right in that case, but you can't really act surprised if Joe takes offense, or if someone else calls you impolite

Because one's a generalized observation and one could be percieved as a personal attack.

Or because it's Tumblr, where everything is a personal attack.

Pretty much.

This sounds backwards to me!

I don't like generalizing about Tumblr that much. It's not all one thing.

But I probably do say things like that about individuals because I empathize. (And I have said worse.)

I know what it's like to be immature and self-important. Some people really have a lot of growing up to do.
