That sucks, OP. Lab work is sometimes great (like getting to handle and play with your animal participants in a behavioural enrichment study) and sometimes shit (like injecting some rabbits with myxomatosis to study a disease progression).

You take the good with the bad and try to remember that in the long run it's for a good cause. At least, a cause good enough for an ethics committee to agree on.
