Re: Is anyone else burnt out?

The world is SO much better now than it was even 50 years ago for humanity.

When you look at the numbers of people lifted out of poverty and the (overall) falling number of conflicts across the world, the world IS getting better.

It's just not covered/promoted as much because negativity sells.

Climate change.

Which is a problem but not an insurmountable one

The ozone layer -- yeah, that's well on its way to being fixed

Not insurmountable huh? Have you read the summary of the latest IPCC report?? We're so fucking screwed.

Humans are hugely adaptable. Could there be major upheavals? Yes. But falling into the trap of saying there's no hope is only going to exacerbate the situation.

Ah yes. Because it doesn't effect you personally you see no point in being concerned. Well you better hope that the wealth of the Western world continues to insulate you from the most serious repurcussions.
Also you clearly have no understanding of how ugly and bloody 'social upheval' can be.

You're right. We should just give up and declare the situation hopeless. Because that will really help.

Thank you for opening my eyes.

there's a lot of reasons it's not covered as much beyond just 'negativity sells'

- the fact that things are not as bad as they used to be is not really news, most of the time

- things that have gotten better are not things we actually need to deal with and face, and people are always going to be oriented towards things that are problems or require some kind of action or present an opportunity

- the world still has plenty of problems and threats and it's still worth paying attention to those. there's no law saying that the total amount of trouble in the world is increasing or declining; minimizing challenges and evils in the world for whatever reason doesn't make sense to me.

The world still has problems, sure.

But ask almost anyone if they would prefer to go back in time to a different generation and I imagine 95% of the population would say no.

Black people in America still have it fucking awful in the US, but I don't think anyone would want to go back to the 60s, 70s, or even 80s for instance.

The world in general. However, in the western world poverty is on the rise. Global changes do mean local effects. If you are in China then your life is on the up, if you are in the West, then we are on the downslide with the relative poverty gap widening exponentially every year. So much of the wealth in the west is locked up in baby Boomer's assets and those bastards just are not dying fast enough to let it cascade down.
