Because she was the distaff take on the Master? And maybe we could have avoided all this wank over gender-switching the Master.

Maybe not. Doctor/Master probably makes more sense than Doctor/Rani. The Doctor and the Master were "best enemies" after all. So I guess it was just there waiting to be written.

And the Master is a particularly ridiculous melodrama villain, what even is "well-written" in that vein?

The Rani didn't care about the Doctor, though, except inasmuch as he got in the way of her mad science. I wouldn't mind seeing the Rani again, but if she'd turned out to be Missy, I'd have been very disappointed, because that level of obsession with the Doctor is perfectly in character for the Master, and very out of character for her.
