If you had the chance to go back in time and get involved in a fandom whose heyday you missed, what fandom would it be?

Lord of the Rings. Specifically, I'd be a total Faramir stan. I never really got into his character until about a year ago and it was too late. I can't find nearly enough fanfic with him as the main character. :(

There's this:

Don't know if you've seen it?

I've read every story on there I think. Twice. :P

The Prisoner. But I have no idea if it even had a fandom. But I'd have loved the meta speculations on it.

It did, but pre-internet those were intense discussions held over cuthroat Cosmic Encounter sessions.

...there was at least one zine, right? Or am I misremembering?

So this is what you meant!

Ancient past ones would be partaking in Watchmen comics, X-Files, Sentinel, Transformers, and 80's 90's DC comics, and Sherlock Holmes (oh I would even send an angry letter to Doyle too!).

Recenter would be Firefly, Merlin (the earlier seasons), ATLA, Durarara!!,

Ugh, "ancient." I was in X-Files fandom in its heyday and I'm only 30 this year. "Ancient" makes it sound like the participants are ancient themselves.

Puh-lease. You should revel in your dinosaur capabilities.

I'm going to cheat and say Lord of the Rings even though I was into Lord of the Rings the first time around. It was just that good; I wish I could relive it.

And honest answer to your question would be...idk, Teen Wolf? I can't think of many fandoms. Was TW fandom always unpleasant and crazy, or did it only get that way later?

I really love that you'd go back and do it all over again. It kind of makes me think of what it is that draws us to fandom in general - just being in love with something and enjoying it as a group. Before it all goes crazy, as it always does. Even so, there's something wonderful at the core of the experience.
elaminator: (Lord of the Rings: Boromir - such a litt)

God, yea, the LOTR heyday was amazing...partially because of what you mention: just being in love with something and enjoying it as a group. Not much can challenge my love for Tolkien so all the discussion and adoration going around back then was ideal; I couldn't get enough of it. I've loved plenty of fandoms since, but none of them have been as 'magical' as LOTR was. I doubt any will ever recapture that exact feeling, and I don't exactly mind, but it does make me a bit nostalgic.

There are some good things about coming into a fandom late, but there's nothing quite like being right in the middle of it while everyone else is just as enamored with the source material as you. There's so much to talk about and consume, and the news is so exciting and delightful to revel in.

Even so, there's something wonderful at the core of the experience.

Certainly! Most people wouldn't bother if that wasn't the case.

Devil May Cry (classic) and The World Ends With You. I had a chance to get into the former but I didn't take it even though I wrote fic...(and I amd so glad that one massive war crossover thing never escaped my notebooks).

FMA. I got there a few years after Brotherhood ended and even though fic is still written, most discussion is over.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Hah, this is exactly what I was going to post.

haha, that is a fandom I feel lucky I got to be part of when it was going on :) though I wish that I hadn't missed the beginning - I joined shortly after the end of the 2003 anime, but the fandom was going strong basically until the end of the manga. It declined quickly after that (I have my theories why, haha). There were some good discussions, but I'm mostly happy that FMA was in the pre-tumblr era.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Firefly and Doctor Who. I got into both post-heyday, and I'm sorry I missed it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Harry Potter.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Teen Wolf. The fandom's peak seemed to have been between season 2 and season 3A, which is also coincidentally where the good parts of the show ended. I wish I could have been involved, but I started watching it too late. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
code geass. i wish i could have followed it week to week.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I really would have liked to have caught the SPN fandom in the first few seasons.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
It was still kind of crazy, but it was definitely nicer imo. It was like 95% Wincest though (but there was a reasonable amount of Gen that focused on their brotherly relationship), so if you're not into that then you may have had even more problems avoiding it. A lot more of the fic was structured in the "monster of the week" format that the show had in its early days, which I enjoyed.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. When everything was Wincest and nothing hurt. What a time to be in fandom.
