I hate how it's given more credence since they're given to women even though they're pretty universal if you're popular and have opinions on the internet.

I'd be willing to put money on the bet that women, particularly ones who discuss feminism, get more rape threats and sexual harassment in the comment section of any major website than men do. Probably death threats too, at least on average.

There have been so many threats under every article I've seen on this subject, especially those written by a woman.

If the article is anon, the comments speculate that the writer is female, and then they make death/rape threats.

It's depressing.

An online game wanted to test that, actually! It's kinda cool. They made four generic AI bots, two were lady avatars and had lady names. Two were male and had male names. These bots just ran around and did generic play things and the game people logged how many harassing messages they got.

The man-bots got an average of 3.5 each, per day.

The lady-bots got 112.3 each, per day.

Let me repeat, these were bots. They weren't doing anything except existing, and they certainly weren't talking about anything controversial.

They discovered if anything, women vastly under-report death threats and harassment online.

Interesting. Link? I'd be interested in seeing more of the game this is from.

I'm not finding the exact study, but http://www.ece.umd.edu/News/news_story.php?id=1788 is a similar one.

That is incredibly depressing.

You know, a few years back I would have had the same thoughts you have now, and now this isn't even about threats to famous youtube/internet folks as I don't follow them, but since I started watching true crime documentaries and read the comments, I couldn't help but notice that there's a overall disparity when it comes to saying "well, she deserved it" as opposed to "poor him", depending on the gender of RL victims of crime. And you know, if people are this horrible about dead people, I have no doubt at all that they'll be just as vicious to the living.
Plus, death threats might be sadly common on the internet and in RL, but rape threats are almost always made against women, so there's that as well.
