08. [ SPOILERS for Spartacus ]

That was a happy surprise for me as well. It was also kind of funny because when Agron and Nasir became an item, a whole bunch of people in fandom pretty much started a death countdown because the last gay couple (Barca and Pietros) got killed off and they figured that Agron and Nasir would be doomed...and then it turns out they're pretty much the only ones to get a happy ending (or at least a hopeful one. I guess the overall situation wasn't too joyous since so many of the people they cared for were killed)

Same. And by the end of the show I was so damned attached to them that I almost didn't want to watch (though I did, day one) because I was going to be absolutely heartbroken when they died, and I knew it was going to happen, I just hoped they would at least go together. When they both survived (after almost everyone they knew and loved had died) I was floored. And so pleased that something hopeful came out of that depressing as hell ending. (Depressing, but nonetheless wonderful.)

Agron and Nasir are one of my favorite fictional couples in the history of anything.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

They're one of mine too. Their canon relationship satisfies me to the point that I almost don't even care that most of the fic for them is either shitty or a modern AU that I have no interest in reading (almost...e)

da

The Spartacus fandom in general is disappointing

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
I will never get over the fact that there is a sad lack of Crixus/Spartacus fic where they have really angry sex

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 10:15 am (UTC)(link)
THIS :/

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Crixus/Spartacus was so strong in the last few episodes. They had a strong canon resolution for their musclebound bristling sexual-tension/rivalry. Perhaps that's why there's not so much actual fic?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
da

maybe, but Agron/Nasir also had a very strong resolution and satisfying canon relationship and they're still the biggest pairing by far in the fandom. it's pretty much one of the only slash pairings in the fandom (there are a couple of others barely hanging on, but they're dwarfed by Nagron). I think people got so focused on canon slash that they didn't really feel like shipping anything else

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I hear you about the Crixus/Spartacus because I definitely expected a lot of fic for them (fandom usually eats up the whole rivalmance shit) but where was all of the Naevia/Diona? It was just so...there in the show. I definitely expected it to take a larger percentage of the femslash in the fandom (for anyone curious the largest f/f pairing is Mira/Saxa, which is definitely something I can get behind because lord knows there was a lot of shipping material, but damn)

Nasir/Agron fic rec

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, their canon relationship is so satisfying that there's little need for fic. It's incredibly rare for me to feel like that about a pairing.

I really liked this nice long Agron/Nasir fic, though.

A Different Arena by ama

Slight AU from canon: In order to pay his debts, Nasir's dominus gifts him to the House of Batiartus. Nasir must learn to adjust to being a ludus slave, without position or protection. Agron finds himself drawn to the new slave, but he is not the only one.

honestly, I'm kind of surprised that any protagonist in that show lived. I always felt like it would be one of those shows where every single character you loved would be dead by the last episode. I wouldn't have blamed them if they killed off Agron and Nasir (since, well, a lot of characters died) but I'm glad they made it to the end.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I've been debating whether or not to watch this (don't really like spoilers but read the secret anyway, oops). I like historical shows, and like sex and drama. But don't like excessive, shock-value violence, which someone told me Spartacus has.

Having a gay couple would very possibly tip the scales for me, though. And if they don't even die... I may just have to give this a shot.

It really does have a ton of absurdly bloody violence. But as someone who hates that sort of thing in most media, yet was able to enjoy Spartacus from beginning to end, I feel like the framework for the violence matters. The story is about a bunch of slaves forced to fight for their lives in the arena, and then for their freedom; it would be stranger if things weren't ridiculously violent, so it doesn't feel excessive from a narrative standpoint. That made a difference for me, it might for you, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It was exactly the same for me. I hate gratuitous violence and have stopped watching many things for this reason. I'm a giant wuss.

Spartacus never tipped that scale for me, even though a third of each episode is slo-mo fight scenes. It must be because they're genuinely necessary for the story, especially for understanding the mentality of the gladiators. The first few episodes of series 1 nearly had me turning off, but then the fantastic dialogue found its feet and I was hooked.

The profanity is so excessive that it's actually funny. I think that's the intention. A typical Batiatus quote would be: "So the gods yet again place fucking cock in arse." I don't know how many times he said it, but it seemed like every ten minutes.

Great point about the violence being critical to understanding the gladiators. And oh, god, the dialogue. You really wouldn't assume a show that can be accurately summed up as "blood, tits, and arse" would have such interesting writing, but Spartacus defied expectations in more ways than one.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, look at that screenshot. Even in it they're mirroring their body language and slightly leaning towards each other. Those actors did such a fantastic job of portraying two people totally in love that I feel happy just seeing that still from it.

Spartacus was a strange old telly programme. It started out as super cheesy with gratuitous violence, and ended up as one of the best things there was on the box, epic and genuinely moving, with great writing.

I was super happy about that too, especially because no one on that show was safe. And I was honestly surprised that they were the ones who survived as well. Thank God both of them did, because I don't know how I would've been able to handle an ending where only one survives and he's just emotionally crippled from losing all of his friends and his lover. At least they'll have each other for support, sheep farming far away from the Roman empire...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
It helped that both of them were original characters to the show. Pretty much everyone else was historical, they had to die.

Yeah it was something that I found pleasantly surprising as well. As others have already said I honestly thought that they were going to bite it at some point during the show, and certainly in the finale I was preparing myself for it, but it didn't happen! So at least I had something happy to take away from the finale.

I had no idea they both lived. You don't know how happy that makes me! Now I can actually finish watching it.

*pours one out for my homie Castus* you died so Agron could live bruh

classic tragic love triangle

I adored how Agron learned to trust Nasir through that whole story arc and it brought them even closer.
