Well, the reality of it is that rape isn't necessarily an act of unadulterated evil done by a obvious villain, just like acts of coercion aren't always physical. Lucretia's behavior is complex... she has reasons that seem good to her for doing what she does, and in her mind, it's not an act of rape. That's how some rapists think: the guy who deliberately approaches a drunk girl at a party, a woman who pressures a man into having sex because "all guys want it", the husband who pressures his wife into having sex even when she doesn't want to, etc. etc.

If circumstances were different, perhaps Crixus would've consented. But there's a glaring power imbalance here, plus the complication that he's in love with another woman, so if he had a free choice in the matter, it's highly likely he would not consent, therefore: rape.

Puts on crash helmet...

This is a good analysis. There's a caricature of rapists as power-mad violent psychopaths, but sexual assault exists on a gradient, and it's important to understand how it can happen, and even sympathise with those who find themselves in that mental process.

Understanding why it happens can help us understand how to stop doing it.

(And boy, do I hate the simplistic way some people say, "Rape is rape." Sure it is, just like "assault is assault," but we don't treat a slap as mayhem. There's a long scale.)

I still found the whole thing iffy because Crixus is a slave. Maybe the act of sleeping with Lucretia wasn't the most unpleasant, but he did it because she was his domina and he had no choice in the matter. Look what happens to disobedient slaves in the show. I think he was aware of her infatuation with him and he encouraged that because it helped him gain some favour and privileges in his otherwise shitty situation. That may not have been the best thing to do, but I understand why he did it.

They didn't have a relationship. He was a slave/gladiator in her husband's ludus, and because he came from an impressive gene pool, she decided he was going to the one to get her pregnant so she could give her husband the child they both wanted. He had no choices in that, and there was no relationship. All that was required was that he take off his loincloth and get to it. She wouldn't even face him during their first year together because she considered him beneath her. She just wanted his seed. It was only later, and probably about one hundred orgasms, that she developed her 'crush'. There was no such thing on his side of it.

Lucretia wasn't a monster but she was most definitely a rapist.

I don't consider it rape because the one time he actually said he didn't want to have sex, she didn't have sex with him. Even if that seemed like (at the time) her only chance to get pregnant, which originally spurred the thing. Lucretia has never had sex with someone who refused to have sex with her, which is different from every other rape scene in the show. Walking all over whether or not consent could be given was just something everyone did in the master/slave relationships, and it was largely part of the world.

Not that Lucretia doesn't have serious problems, mind you, but I don't think that being a rapist is one of them.

She was still a rapist, she just wasn't a rapist THAT time. A rapist is someone who has committed a rape. Not someone who has never foregone the opportunity to rape another person.

You're basically saying that if a guy raped his wife, but then, some time later, wanted to have sex with her again and when she said "no" he listened and backed off this time instead of raping her, his listening to her refusal that time somehow erases the time when he DID rape her. No.

When did she commit rape, is the question? He never gave refusal or consent verbally, except the one time he refused, and she listened. What more do you want?

Crixus had absolutely no choice in the matter, therefore he didn't consent, therefore it is rape. The fact that he was resigned to it as a fact of life and didn't outwardly act in ways to make you believe he was traumatized, does not change the fact that he was most definitely raped.

Yeah rape-party down here.

Why are we ok with rape-assault as justice for women (yet use sympathize character to use this method, erghh), yet men were all hell break lose when that's happened. Well, having plague is nice, isn't it? Isn't?
