Has anyone else had this problem?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I've kept in touch with one of my high school friends for years, but we've been drifting a little slowly over the past few. It's gotten to the point where I have to admit to myself that I don't enjoy her company anymore. When we make plans, I have to be in the mood, and it has to be something where we won't have to make too much conversation. I did a mental test where I asked myself if another friend wanted to do something last minute, would I still do it - the answer was yes. With her, not so much. It's not that she's a bad person, she's a good person, but we have nothing to talk about anymore, and have very little in common.

But because we have been friends for so long, I'm still worried about losing touch with her. i don't want her to just slip by the wayside. And the thing is that I do miss seeing her. But I'm not even sure whether I really miss her, or if I miss the friendship, and if I just feel guilty essentially friend dumping someone.

Not sure how to finish this post, even. Just... has anyone else had this problem?

Oooo yea. With a girl who I've known since Middle School, actually. Over the years we've drifted apart; each year we have less and less in common, to the point where when we talk we mostly just update each other on how we're doing. It sucks a lot, but the truth is I miss feeling close to her more than I actually miss her (if that makes any sense). We haven't talked in quite a while and I keep telling myself to just call or text, but I don't know what to say and don't think there's much friendship to save at this point.

Yeah, but with most of the friends like that I jjust accepted the drift and didn't force myself to contact them. I feel pretty happy with that.

I think it's only natural as you get older, and have found this to be particularly true of high school friends. They're not bad people, but... the experience we shared was so long ago and we've all changed a lot since then that we might as well be strangers. Only we're not, so that makes it extra weird, if that makes any sense?

Anyway, it's okay. If you don't want to drop this friendship entirely, figure out how often you want to see her (maybe long enough to the extent that "catching up" can take up most of the conversation) and make regular lunchdates or something. Meanwhile, get involved in other activities, both so you can meet new people and have an excuse for how you're spending your time now.
