quick history of the term

It comes from superhero comics fandom. Inspired by a Green Lantern story where the male lead came home to find his girlfriend's body in his fridge.

Due to Gail Simone's "Women in Refrigerators" site, "fridging" became a shorthand critical term for any writing that does horrible things to a female supporting character primarily to affect the male lead. It gets used more loosely than that, though.

cue slew of people declaring danny "not fridging" because it's a man so he doesn't count

Eh, it counts. Interpreting it as "bad things happen to women to hurt men" was problematic, even when reading Gail's original list. For example, Wanda Maximoff losing her sons was not fridging her, but arguably was fridging her sons--to change her status quo from stable mother to single loose cannon.

Her husband's status wasn't the focus, either. He was deactivated and rebooted to mess with her.

So it's better as a non-gendered term.
cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (eeeeeeehhhhhh)

Tangentially related: in DC Scribblenauts, if you summon a fridge in front of a Kyle Rayner, he weeps.
