Say you're writing a fantasy/sci-fi story featuring beings different than humans, ie. elves, aliens, vampires, robots, sentient animals, etc. You decide one of the conflicts in your story will be antagonism between humans and the beings you chose to write about. Why do the fictional races hate humans so much? What's the reason behind their fighting?

Humans use up too much time.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Because humans are dicks.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
humans are always wearing shiny pants and flaunting their hot butts

best suggestion

fund it

I honestly feel "humans are dicks/humans are evil" is overdone, especially in a fantasy work where you get to create a whole new power dynamic between everyone.

In my fantasy worlds I tried to change things up by having one world where humans where the weakest power wise and had to work extra hard to survive in a world where "everything is trying to kill them". They're not especially hated (well by some) but now especially valued either at least for being humans.

In another world where all the fantasy factions are at odds with each others and hostile with each other, humans are hated in the past for being considered kinda egotistical and "too big for their britches" but have been smacked down by a bunch of other stronger groups.

Basically I like making humans a part of the world but not 'super important' OR 'super awful'. They're just...IDK...kinda there.

let me explain: "everything is trying to kill them" sorta refers more to the world being especially dangerous for them, beasts, magic, the works.

Just explaining because that might seem contradictory.

the most neutral one would be: fighting for resources. self-interest. wanting to be right in a conflict that has gone on for so long that both sides have done horrible, unforgivable things.

Because humans breed like vermin, use entirely too many resources, and give nothing back except for being good pet food when they die. Actual reason the elves in my dark fantasy stories I'm working on hate the humans.

The humans are quite neutral towards the elves in question.

I think these are good go-to reasons for antagonism against humans in almost any story.

I am writing a story like this actually. The answer is that the humans they are antagoistic with serve a queen who wants to eliminate all the non human intelligent species. Apart from those specific humans they are alright.

Reasons that exist in my universe (though not all stuff I've actually written, yet):

Fairies - are jerks, and just like messing with everyone, and humans are the closest and thus easiest targets.
Vampires - gotta eat.
Demons - enjoy mayhem and murder.
Angels - are convinced we've gone down the wrong path and want to correct that.
Hostile aliens - driven to conquer everything.
Interdimensional telepathic viral entity - wants to assimilate the entire multiverse.

case, you are so cool

Case, we all legitimately love you. You must know it to be true.

Inability for humans to grasp something fundamental and yet extremely (ah ha) alien about the 'aliens' that makes the aliens recoil in a sort of primal disgust/revulsion.

Nobody really 'did' anything, it's just...we are us, and they are them, and some concepts cannot be translated.

Fundamentally incompatible philosophical points of view or relations to existence / space / time, I guess.

I probably wouldn't write that storyline, though.
