(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 01:46 am (UTC)(link)In my fantasy worlds I tried to change things up by having one world where humans where the weakest power wise and had to work extra hard to survive in a world where "everything is trying to kill them". They're not especially hated (well by some) but now especially valued either at least for being humans.
In another world where all the fantasy factions are at odds with each others and hostile with each other, humans are hated in the past for being considered kinda egotistical and "too big for their britches" but have been smacked down by a bunch of other stronger groups.
Basically I like making humans a part of the world but not 'super important' OR 'super awful'. They're just...IDK...kinda there.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 02:00 am (UTC)(link)The humans are quite neutral towards the elves in question.

I think these are good go-to reasons for antagonism against humans in almost any story.

Fairies - are jerks, and just like messing with everyone, and humans are the closest and thus easiest targets.
Vampires - gotta eat.
Demons - enjoy mayhem and murder.
Angels - are convinced we've gone down the wrong path and want to correct that.
Hostile aliens - driven to conquer everything.
Interdimensional telepathic viral entity - wants to assimilate the entire multiverse.

What the quality that "makes one Human" is, or what exactly it is that "nature intended," is the focus of a constantly raging debate - at least among the self-proclaimed Humans. Most of society thinks these people who still get sick and get weak and get old and POOP for god's sake are highly annoying and a drain on resources, but nothing can be done about them because they're still legally "persons" and eradicating them would be a crime. The rest look sadly at them as the last struggling slackers of a bygone era who refuse to get with the times.

The problem is, the Humans have control of a lot of things. Money, power, government positions (they're being pushed out recently, but Humanity has never gone down without a fight!). They're the old guard who are slowly crumbling away but trying to instill traditional morals and values about Humanity in everyone... only nobody is really sure, or can agree on what Humanity actually means.
How much of someone born human (natural birth or in a tube or wherever) has to remain in order for someone to adopt the "human" label? Where is the line between human and cyborg, cyborg and android (and besides, if you upload a "human" consciousness into a robot, aren't they just a "human" with a robot body?), and if you manipulate genetics so that someone is half bandit husky, is that "human"? How close do people have to stick to how they are born, (which, the evolutionists point out, is far from the ancient sperm+egg 23-chromosome-pair model from the early 2000s the Humans insist on using), in order to be "human" still? What about thoughts, and feelings, sentience and sapience, and how many of those are sufficient, and which ones are necessary, in order to qualify as Human? What does being non-"human" mean, anyway? Should the term human be eradicated completely and "person" used instead?
And what does "person" mean?

Nobody really 'did' anything, it's just...we are us, and they are them, and some concepts cannot be translated.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 04:25 am (UTC)(link)I probably wouldn't write that storyline, though.
