Same, I keep going in circles about it. Especially since it's an equally valid point that being a vegetarian also heavily relies on dangerous and underpaid migrant work, which is...I mean, it's not my intention to place an animal's rights above a human's, but that is how I feel it comes off. The entire food industry is messed up, really, and I'm not sure that there's truly a world-conscious, ethical answer to it.

Vegetarian foods (a much bigger category than people like to pretend, btw) are hardly the only thing made by exploiting human labor, so that reason really, really seems cherry picked to get back at extreme vegetarians/vegans. You are not lessening human suffering by eating burgers, get over yourselves.

Well no, but you have to admit there's some inherent hypocrisy in attempting to lessen animal suffering while buying wholesale into human suffering, regardless of where it comes from. That's the part I'm stuck on-- food, clothing, any number of things that I consume contribute to human suffering, which is terrible, and makes it hard to justify putting an animal's needs before people's. I'm doing my best to lessen my reliance on unfair human labor in other areas of my life, but food is one of those things that's harder to get around. I haven't got the time necessary to grow my own, and my nearest farmers' market is a thirty mile drive.

If you're concerned about migrant workers and dangers to employees, maybe try supporting your local farmer's market or growing some of your own stuff. I realize that might not be achievable for everyone due to time or financial restraints, but some vegans are also concerned about those issues and have come up with alternatives.

Yeah, growing my own is tough, I don't really have the time to be able to do that...and my nearest farmers' market is about thirty miles out from me, which is doable, but still a bit of a stretch on my dollar considering gas prices. :/ I've been looking into farm delivery options, but it's hard to find information on who works for them and such.

If you're saying that vegetarian-friendly foods like fruits/vegetables/pasta/rice/etc. are reliant on 'dangerous and underpaid migrant work', then uh, non-vegetarians also consume those in huge quantities. So unless you eat nothing but meat, you won't save those workers much trouble.

Oh no, of course, I don't mean to say that meat-eaters are free of responsibility in the whole thing. I'm talking about struggling with the inherent hypocrisy in attempting to lessen the suffering of an animal while buying in to human suffering at the same time. An anon above me pointed out that it isn't just food, there's so much in our lives that relies on the exploitation of human labor, and I have trouble justifying attempting to protect an animal instead of a human. Does that make sense?

But... how is not being a vegetarian privileging human rights above animal rights? I'm with you on there being no clear cut 100% ethical choices in today's food industry, but being vegetarian is hardly *less* ethical than not being vegetarian. You're buying into the system of human suffering regardless, sorry to say, so why not at least limit animal suffering while you're at it?

I just don't get this whole argument, to be honest (not targeted at you! I've heard it from lots of people). It's like saying "Well, I can't be 100% perfect, so I might as well not try at all." There are shades of grey-- life's all about making ethical compromises. I'm a vegetarian who still consumes dairy products, and I own some inherited fur. Clearly, I'm not perfect, but I don't see why that should mean I shouldn't still strive for making the more ethical choice when I can.

Anyways! Sorry for the long post-- it really isn't targeted at you, you just got me thinking. (And I genuinely don't care if people are vegetarians-- I don't think it makes one a worse or a better person in itself, I just also don't understand/buy the argument you posed.)

This, exactly.

I agree that the produce industry - almost any part of the food industry - is probably going to entail some sort of human rights abuse. Ethical consumerism is important, though there's only so much an average person can know.

But non-vegetarians trying to take the moral high horse and acting like it's ethically worse to be a vegetarian than not is just ridiculous.
