As someone who is passionate about animal rights and welfare, it makes me very sad that PETA is still seen as the default, and basically scares people away from caring about animals.

I'm vegetarian myself, for environmental as well as animal rights reasons (very anti-factory farming) but I'm not morally against meat, per se. If you don't want to become a vegetarian, there are absolutely compromises. Buy grass-fed and cage-free beef, for example? It can be a little more expensive, but it absolutely makes a statement. Or consider reducing the amount of meat you eat - even going vegetarian for one day can reduce your carbon footprint.

So yeah, responsible consumerism is possible even if you don't become vegetarian.
