9/11 killed it. Kinda hard to have fun with conspiracies when there actually was a real one. And then of course, you are just not allowed to criticize the government or those that go beyond decency to hide things from the public. The truth is out there, but go looking for it and you'll be in gitmo.

Well, the end of the series (and how it got bad near the end) also killed it. Often fandoms stop flourishing if there's no more canon material being made.

You don't think Osama Bin Laden conspired with a, mainly Saudi, terrorist cell to smash planes into prominent landmarks and also helped that cell plan attacks on Madrid, London, and (hilariously) Glasgow?

You don't think that conservative elements in many Western governments, but most prominently the US and UK then used the aftermath to conspire to push through a massive amount of spending on their respective military-industrial complexes and surveillance technologies? You don't think that evidence was manufactured to sell an invasion of Iraq to the public, an invasion that was motivated by the idea of removing someone who had made a career of embarrassing the US as often as possible, and that subsequent to that those same elements conspired to try and sell an invasion of Iran, but had overreached themselves?

I think that those conspiracies exist. I think they have been pretty bad and keeping it secret (well, the former did a reasonable job), but they still existed.
