Penpals

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
What's your opinion of them? Would you get one? Why or why not? Have you had one? What was your experience?

I've been thinking of getting one, but I'm slightly nervous, being the internet is a big ocean, its depths filled with unknowable dangers...and creeps...I enjoy snail mail...but I'm not sure if i'm completely sold on the idea. I have international friends...but I'm looking to correspond with someone from the UK or France. Sigh.

What say you?

I used to have pen pals all the time before the internet, and they were great! Give it a try!

I'm shy and I suck at conversation so they aren't for me, but I love the thought of them. I think it's great.

I have one right now, and it's wonderful. I mean...it's not traditional, since it's through email instead of snail mail, but still. I love the conversations that I have with her.

I've had penpals in the past and it's fun, but I'm really, really bad at keeping up with correspondence when life suddenly gets busy or I get stressed out/depressed, and then I feel guilty about letting people down. But honestly, old fashioned snail mail is so much fun. I miss it. A few sites of interest:

You have to create an account to log in and see addresses, but you don't have to put in your address unless you want to.

Most people on here are nice, but they're very, um... suburban Christian housewife who votes Republican, and thinks vaccines are suspicious. Not everyone is like that, but if that demographic isn't your cup of tea, tread carefully. As far as politics and social issues go, it's more Facebook than Tumblr and while people make fun of Tumblr, I'll take it over the FB crowd any day.

I have a penpal from back home. I think we're actually better friends now than when we were in school together. I really enjoy writing to her, and the cards and stationary she writes on are always very pretty and/or cute.

I just love the act of writing long-hand. Thinking internationally, I think it would be really interesting to have a penpal from a country where I want to learn the language...

If you're uncomfortable giving out your home address, is a PO Box an option?
