So much--SO MUCH--of "shipping" means suppressing basic character traits of that character in order to prop a relationship that could never exist in canon. Dramione, for instance. Draco DESPISES Muggleborns. Even if he could hatefuck Hermione, SHE would never, ever, ever go for Draco. She is perhaps the most highly principled character in the books. She could never have a relationship with a racist. Why do people see a connection there? It would never happen.

And Drarry? BOTH CHARACTERS ARE CANONICALLY STRAIGHT. I hate shipping that twists everything completely out of character. Like, write your own stories, don't take other characters and change EVERYTHING about them. It's just annoying and cringe-inducing.

No, that's what shipping is when all you care about is two cute boys bumping naughty bits.

People that actually give a shit about characterization and how characters interact are still shipping. Just because you haven't come across much of it doesn't mean it's not out there. Try a fandom that isn't Harry Potter.

Oh fuck you, you homophobic piece of garbage.

"OMG THEY'RE STRAIGHT!!!!" Where exactly does it say that? No where? Have you heard of bisexuality? Pansexuality? ANYTHING OTHER THAN GAY OR STRAIGHT YOU FUCKING IDIOT?

Of course you haven't because you're just so fucking concerned that the dirty gays will "ruin the character". Fuck you.

But showing interest in a character of the same gender when there wasn't any mention of that in the book is such a huge difference in character. /sarcasm

sorry about your slash ship not becoming canon

I remember when I used to be like you. Then I realized that it didn't actually matter, and stopped being upset by people doing things that I don't have to participate in.

In a weird way, I agree with OP that only the original/official material matters. And because only the original/official material matters, I'm not at all bothered by what people do viz. fanworks (it's not like, for example, any crack pairing is going to actually change the characters in the source, so who cares?). It's all just harmless fun.
