Honestly, is that what we're calling fat these days? Because that's not fat. Not by a long shot.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Of course. Because when people who are truly obese deliver messages about body acceptance, people go ballistic.

Really? Was there any uproar when Mary Lambert released 'secrets'?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I didn't see any, but where I hang out, no one talks about any of her songs except She Keeps Me Warm and that cover of Teenage Dirtbag.

But I have noticed that in general, people are more likely to say that it's ~unhealthy~ for obese people to love their body than they are to say the same thing about Hollywood-chubby people.

It didn't really reach mainstream popularity.

oh for fuck's sake, who gives a shit

I dunno, maybe people who think it's a problem to keep ratcheting up the standards for thinness?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, she's about the same size as most women I know. I can't help but wonder if she's made any of them think they're fat when they didn't used to.

IMO she isn't "fat" but compared to the shit we're bombarded with constantly she's definitely bigger... And if the people you know who look like her haven't thought of themselves as fat before this song came out despite the messages received from every goddamn corner of the media, I thiiink they'll be okay.

It's not thin, either.

No, she's not thin. She looks healthy. Healthy on the side of enjoying a good meal, but healthy all the same.

According to the BMI scale (which I acknowledge has its problems) I'm towards the upper end of the normal range and I'm noticeably bigger than this girl. From what I've seen of her, she's noticeably taller than I am too so yeah, I'd say she's well within a normal range for her height and frame.

Yeah, I agree with that.

It's true though that in some areas of pop culture she'd be considered fat. (I wouldn't call her fat. But there's still a lot of thin-ideal going on.)

Exactly this! I am a middle aged female who weights 240 pounds. I was talking about this song with a coworker 10 years younger and maybe 160 pounds heavier than me.

I know Meghan is the perfect precious right now, but she confuses the hell out of me. She's a little (yes, little) white girl singing with sounds like hip-hop with 50s rock. It smells like all production and no personality for herself.

I am also having a case of sour grapes because a different coworker (who is about 300 pounds) told me about the song, and she loves it so. I play electric bass guitar, so I was thinking it was something pro musical bottom end. Not the other bottom end. ;)

If you look at the end of the music video when she smiles, it is the most fake smile ever. Like, I have not seen eyes that soul-less or a smile that plastic since I saw a One Direction Calendar in the discount bin at Barnes and Nobles.

There might be a personality there, but it's been covered up by make-up and pastel colors.

Compared to the real world - no. Compared to what popular media usually shows us - yes.
